Are you planning an unmedicated birth? It’s something that more and more birthing people are choosing to do year after year. Have you thought about what you need to pack in your hospital bag checklist for an unmedicated birth?

When it comes to preparing for a natural birth, one crucial aspect is organizing your hospital bag. Ensuring that you have everything you need packed and ready can significantly contribute to a smooth and comfortable birthing experience. So, let’s take a look at I wanted to walk you through some categories of items you should include in your hospital bag for natural birth.

BONUS! Stick to the end to get a FREE list of all my birth essentials to pack for a hospital bag!

First, bring plenty of snacks and your favorite beverages.

There are a few things you’ll want to make sure you have on hand to keep your energy up during labor.

You’ll definitely want to pack some snacks that are high in protein and easy to eat on the go, like granola bars or nuts. You’ll also want to bring along a water bottle or two, as staying hydrated is key during labor. Make sure it has a straw! This will make it easier for you to drink from it when you are not standing or sitting perfectly upright.

It’s also a good idea to have a few change of clothes for you and your partner with you in case your labor goes longer than expected. After all, you never know what might happen! I personally had a soft, comfortable outfit I reserved to wear for when after my baby was born. I felt so relaxed after that first shower, putting on clothes that made me feel so cozy.

Pack items that will keep you comfortable and relaxed.

There are a few things you can bring to the hospital to help make your natural birth more comfortable and relaxed.

Consider bringing a loose-fitting nightgown or robe. This will help you stay comfortable during labor, and it will also make it easier for nurses and doctors to check your progress.

Bring some washcloths and towels, as well as a small bottle of unscented lotion. You can use these to wipe your face and body during labor, and you can use the lotion to prevent your skin from getting too dry.

Also, pack a small case with any essential oils or other relaxation techniques that you want to use during labor. This could include a diffuser and some lavender oil, or a positive affirmations deck. By preparing yourself with these items, you can actively contribute to ensuring that your natural birth is as comfortable and relaxing as possible. My favorite essential oil during labor was lavender and peppermint on rotation)

If you’re planning on breastfeeding…

Now, some of these items I find a little unnecessary, as the hospital may provide some of these. Here’s a list of items you could put on your hospital bag checklist for an unmedicated birth:

  • A nursing pillow: This will help you to position your baby correctly while breastfeeding.
  • Nursing pads: These absorb leakage and help to keep your clothing dry.
  • Breast milk storage bags: You can use these to store expressed milk for later use.
  • Nipple balm: Especially helpful if this is your first time breastfeeding, nipple balm can be used to soothe sore nipples as your gets used to nursing.
  • Nursing Bras: for sleep and for pumping (if you need to)
  • A water bottle: This will help you to stay hydrated while nursing.

By packing these items in your hospital bag, you’ll be prepared to start breastfeeding as soon as your baby is born!

Next, if you’re having a water birth, make sure to pack a top that can get or swimsuit.

Water births offer a remarkable and serene experience for expecting mothers and birthing people. When preparing for a water birth, it is crucial to pack appropriate attire such as a swimsuit or a loose-fitting top that can withstand water immersion – that is, if it is a concern with you. Otherwise, embrace your nakedness and leave worry at the door.

Creating a calming and soothing atmosphere is another aspect to consider during your water birth. Including your preferred hypnobirthing audio or any other meditative tracks that bring you tranquility can greatly enhance your birthing experience. These audio resources can assist in promoting relaxation, managing pain, and fostering a positive mindset throughout labor.

It is essential to recognize that water births possess the potential to be extraordinary and transformative occasions. The buoyancy and warmth of the water create an environment that facilitates relaxation, reduces stress, and promotes a greater sense of control during childbirth. By preparing and bringing the necessary items, you can optimize your comfort, immerse yourself in the water’s embrace, and welcome your little one into the world through a gentle and serene process.
